John Potter steps into IMSA GT3 Cup Challenge at Miller Motorsports Park

April 25, 2011 (Salt Lake City, Utah) – This weekend will mark a first for John Potter and his Magnus Racing operation, as he will compete in the IMSA GT3 Cup Challenge by Yokohama for the first time. Part of the annual Larry H. Miller Dealerships Utah Grand Prix, the event will allow Potter, a resident of Salt Lake City, to compete at his team’s home base at Miller Motorsports Park near Salt Lake City, Utah.

While the GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series and American Le Mans Series races that Magnus Racing normally contests are endurance races with pit stops, driver changes, and a mixture of prototype and production classes, the GT3 Cup Challenge races are 45 minute sprints made up entirely of Porsche 911 GT3 Cup cars. With the team’s ‘Party Barge’ – the 911 GT3 Cup that is driven by Potter and Craig Stanton in the American Le Mans Series – not in use again until the ALMS’ Baltimore Grand Prix in September, Potter will drive that car in the GT3 Cup Challenge’s Platinum class, a field of 25 cars.

Potter teamed with Stanton to finish third in the GT-C class at the American Le Mans Series race at the Long Beach Grand Prix, and the duo currently sit second in the Rolex Sports Car Series’ GT class in a similar Porsche 911 GT3 Cup.

“It’s kind of a no brainer to run in this weekend’s GT3 Cup Challenge here at Miller Motorsports Park,” said Potter. “It’s a competitive series and works out perfectly for us since we now have a bit of a break between the ALMS race in Long Beach and our GRAND-AM race in Virginia. I’m excited to see how we will do in a sprint race format with our Porsche, and hopefully we will learn something here that we can take back to our endurance racing programs. I’ve driven more laps here at Miller Motorsports Park than almost anybody, so I think we’ll be pretty competitive this weekend in the GT3 Cup Challenge.”

The first GT3 Challenge race of the weekend will begin on Saturday, April 30, at 11:45 AM and will last for 45 minutes. The second race will begin on Sunday, May 1, at 1:00 PM and will also last for 45 minutes. More information about the
